Tension Headaches – Striking The Balance!
We all battle stress every single day; from the moment we wake up and until we retire to sleep. It is a never-ending clockwork of having to juggle workload and home chores plus everything on the sides and in between. Mere mention of all of these responsibilities and work can be very stressful already. This is something that we have to face every day because it is a part and parcel of daily existence; which can be monotonous yet very stressful. Coping mechanisms when it comes to stress vary from person to person. There are those who can handle it quite easily; while there are those who wilt up and get rattled when faced with nerve-wracking scenarios.
Stress and Tension Headaches
Pains and aches are felt with the usual demands from work that puts great toll on our bodies. It is indeed a very fast-paced world; and the stakes are incredibly higher than ever because there is a huge competition for success in the corporate ladder; although, a healthy degree of stress can be beneficial because it pushes you towards accomplishing more things. Modernity has its peaks and lows and success has its price; so-to-speak. Unfavorable health conditions can be one of them. One of the most common pains that we experience from stress is what we refer to as tension headaches. This is most prevalent among adults; because they are the ones most exposed to stressful conditions. Women are said to be most prone to tension or stress headaches than men. Recent studies have also shown that around 30%-80% of adults in the United States alone suffer from this ailment.
Tension headaches are categorized into two types; namely:
- Episodic – This type of tension headache is described as a pain or tightness which radiates around the forehead or at the nape. This can be mild to moderate in severity. This type of stress headache usually lasts from 30 minutes and can be felt for a number of days. But, in most cases; this only happens for like once or twice a month. This usually is severe during midday; and gradually increases in severity. This is often triggered by stressful scenarios.
- Chronic – The pain felt with this type of headache is categorized as a throbbing or pulsating pain which affects the entire head area. This is also more prevalent in females than in males. As the name suggests, the pain may differ in intensity and frequency; but it is always present. This type of headache can be felt for as long as 3 months or so. This; however, does not pose any threat to one’s balance and eyesight.
The Balancing Act
Shuffling daily tasks can be quite overwhelming and poses extreme demands to people which could be detrimental to one’s well-being. A lot of diseases that people contract nowadays are categorized as lifestyle diseases which are commonly triggered by stress; and tension headache is one of them. Cardiovascular diseases and cancer are two of the many catastrophic diseases that are mainly attributed to stress factors. Tension headaches must be given proper treatment and care so as to help alleviate the symptoms. A stress-free life is truly impossible; but managing stress is something doable. All it takes is balance and a healthy frame of mind and body.
